Other Substances

Substance – the innate qualities that give all materials their individual character – can bring powerful poetic and associative qualities to visual forms. Materials like coal, honey, salt, tar, charred wood, and animal remains are not common sculptural materials. But, in conjunction with other materials, the assembled forms create strong visual images. Some of these sculptures owe their origins to spiritual texts or concepts, like Taste and See, which is taken from Psalm 34 of the Bible.
