Crucible was commissioned by Jane Owen to go in a public courtyard in New Harmony IN. New Harmony was the base for early geological explorations in the United States, which were conducted by David Dale Owen, son of New Harmony’s founder, the social reformer Robert Owen. The younger Owen was the geologist for three states, led several important surveys, and amassed a geological collection that later formed the basis for the Smithsonian’s collection in Washington DC. The fountain, which contains glacial erratic’s from New England and the mid-west, was dedicated at a convention of State Geologists from throughout the country. Each of the four granite arcs around the base of the fountain has a geologic specimen from Owen’s personal collection embedded within them.
