Arbor Vitae

Coolbaugh Hall, Colorado School of Mines, 1999. Golden, CO; granite (12′ x 15′)

Arbor Vitae (with Peter Richards) was commissioned for Coolbaugh Hall, at the Colorado School of Mines, in Golden CO. This commission was awarded by the Colorado Council on the Arts. The imagery was based on the omnipresence of branching in natural and human forms – from the atomic to the celestial. The topographical map on the exterior of the building is based on a satellite photograph of the state of CO, which was sandblasted on granite panels. The interior had granite hexagonal shapes with branching imagery set in the floor and the walls. The pattern for the hexagonal arrangement was based on a polymer molecule developed by a scientist working in the building.
