Substance, aka “material”,  gives three-dimensional forms their unique character. I have worked with substances like coal, tar, honey, salt, charred wood, and animal remains because they suggest rich poetic and symbolic associations for sculptural imagery. Sometimes the choice is determined by a text, like Taste and See, which was taken from Psalm 34.
